Concerts

Campus Activities, Off-campus activities attended with SCF friends No Comments »

Wow, there are a lot of concerts this week! Three that I know of. If anybody is taking Music Appreciation, like myself, you might want to check some of these out and get those concert reports out of the way. :D

  1. Monday night at 7, in the Holly Hall (I believe), where the Sarasota Youth Orchestra rehearses, they will be having a concert

  2. Tuesday night at 8, Neel Auditorium at SCF! I believe its the wind ensembles that are playing then? Either way, the experience is sure to be fantastic. $4 for students, $8 for not-students.
  3. Thursday night at 8, Neel Auditorium at SCF. The orchestra will be performing that night. As someone who used to play with the orchestra, I’d really like to make it to this one. $4 for students, $8 for not-students.

Sadly, I have other obligations later in the week and will only be going to the on Monday. Oh well! I’ve heard great things about the Sarasota Youth Orchestra, and this is my first time attending any of their performances. I look forward to it, and I hope I see some of you there! Its that time of year again… Spring semester has arrived, alongside a shiny new year! I hope everybody has their classes sorted out and their books purchased.

I also hope everybody had a fantastic vacation! I know that I had a good time. A lot of my break was spent just laying around and enjoying the comfort of my bed, but when I was out and

I have a new found love for giant salamanders, the coolest amphibians in existence. They’ve got the cutest little feet, and the back half of their body looks like an eel and there are these little spindly skin antler like things coming off of their face and I know its strange but I think its adorable.

Did anybody else have a fun vacation? Did anybody go to an aquarium or a theme park, or even fly out of state?

And now that classes are starting again, is everybody looking forward to the schedule they’ve pulled together? I am. I’m looking forward to pretty much all of my classes, and it’s even more exciting to think about the fact that after this semester… I’ll have completed my career at SCF. I have three semesters that I can look back

~ PTK Spring Induction Ceremony, Regionals & More ~

Campus Activities, Clubs, Off-campus activities attended with SCF friends No Comments »

Just before spring break our Venice campus had the semesters Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony. The ceremony takes place in the Selby Room of the 400 bld., which is also the room where the officers have introductory meetings for prospective members. On the night of the Induction Ceremony this year the room had great PTK member art displayed at one of the corners of the room. There was some really nice work in the room for family and friends to browse after the ceremony. I should probably mention that last semester I was inducted as a member, and this semester I was inducted as the Officer of History. Anyway, I was happy to share my poetry anthology, which I constructed last semester, in a scrap book style at the Induction. Much more impressive was Evan Lamar’s work, a fellow officer and SCF art student, he displayed his awesome pottery. Taylor Meredith read one of her beautiful poems at the night’s event as well, who cast a very personalized tone on the evening. Both of these officers won an award at the recent PTK Regional gathering in St.Pete, held at the Hilton, for their great contributions of artistic talents. Wicked awesome, you two!

The Regional Event was fun and informative, and they even provided food and Starbucks coffee! I’ve got to have my morning coffee. I’m only human, lol. I seriously think they need to put a Dunkin Donuts on campus or just outside of it, but that’s another matter altogether. Is anyone with me? Hahaha. The coffee machine in the Library lobby just doesn’t do it for me. I tried to drink one of those coffees one cold Thursday evening last semester. I had to stop myself from spraying it across my philosophy class, lol. If a Hilton can have a built-in Starbucks why not a SCF Dn’D? I’ll have mine light and sweet please! Okay, enough with my addiction, back to the Regionals! As I was saying, the event was actually full of good humor. We heard some very good member speeches for competition on this year’s theme, which is communication. There were awards, a small art exhibition, and writing contest submissions. Our chapter, Alpha Mu Upsilon, won some great awards for member contributions on campus, like

the 5 Star status award, so we had much to cheer about! I just want to say a “Thank you very much!” to all our members who helped out with events last semester and this semester too, like the Induction volunteers!

Hey, I hope to see everyone out and about at the upcoming Spring Fling on campus ,which has a Greek/Olympic theme this time, so bring your togas if ya got em’! The Spring Fling is on Wednesday March 23rd this semester, from 10am to 2pm, I believe. Oh, and this Friday if you’re interested, there is a viewing of the movie The Soloist in Rm. 307 in the Library and a discussion afterwards on the effect of music and art on the human psyche. I’ll do my best to make it, but in the meantime, have a good one!

Exchange and MOTS (Manasota Operation Troop Support) completed our “Toes For Joes” Sock Drive. We filled 70 boxes, for locally deployed troops, in Iraq and Afghanistan. We all met up at 9:00am, this Saturday morning. We got the boxes ready, actually knowing the names of the soldiers who were going to be opening them. We packed socks, shower shoes, candy, beef jerky, energy bars, letters, and cards. They are filled to limit, and ready to go!

The Veterans Exchange, which I’m extremely proud of co-founding, has accomplished so very much this semester. Our fantastic Venice Campus Student Life Advisor, Jeff Snyder, continuously extends his appreciation of what we have accomplished. He cannot recall a club, being newly chartered (only since this past August), achieving so much. And it was not easy. It took a lot of hard work and dedication. Our efforts have helped propel the Bradenton Campus to establish a Veteran’s Club of their own. To be honest, I’m still amazed at how all of this happened. The “Veterans Exchange” came to life from one simple question posed in a conversation during the summer term:

“Why don’t we have a Veterans Club on Campus?”

And that’s how things happen. It’s as simple as that—having a conversation— asking questions. So now, the Venice Campus has Veterans Organization that has over 40 members. I am truly honored to know that something I helped to create will become a permanent part of the social structure of SCF. It’s a great feeling.

Sometime ago, and I think it may have been my first blog, I wrote something like: “if a club doesn’t exist on campus, and you feel strongly about it, then START one.” Mostly anything is possible, and I’ve got the evidence to back it up.

Well—three finals left! STATS, History of Film, and Horror Literature. I’ll be officially done with my classes by 2pm on Tuesday, and by that time I’ll also be somewhat normal again (and “somewhat” is a key word in that last statement).

Many Thanks!

Just got back from the Veterans Day Parade in Sarasota. First, could not have asked for more perfect weather. Second, it was great to be surrounded by so many fellow Veterans, and also the many who expressed their thanks for our collective service. I also

got a free cup of coffee today from Starbucks! (Like I need more coffee).

BTW, yesterday was a huge success. Our Veteran’s Day Campus Cookout was received with much excitement! We made a profit, and we were able to collect a generous amount for both the VX and also to help out a member of the Venice Campus Staff, whom has recently been diagnosed with a serious illness. We would like to say thank you to all who bought a ticket, and all who simply donated!

Well, It’s Veterans Day, by the time this blog posts it will be over. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still thank a Veteran, because you can do that any day of the year.

Almost didn’t…

Okay, so it was 9:30am and I had just finished my Stats class. I had a ton of things that I could have done before my 12:30 class. One, start my research for a paper that’s due next Tuesday. Two, do the Stats homework I was just assigned. Three,

also knew that I could take a chance and see if there was short line at the voting station. So I did. And you know what? I almost didn’t vote today. This really surprised me. You see, I often complain about what’s going on in politics, and I feel I can justly do so, because I vote. It doesn’t seem to make much sense to me when I hear people complain like a mob of angry shoppers about what’s going in government, and then I usually always hear: “And that’s why I don’t vote.” Today, I was almost a member of that angry mob. I almost didn’t vote. I think it’s crazy. I mean if you feel strongly about something, then try to be a part of it, by changing it, or keeping it the same. No matter your party: Republican, Democrat, Independent, Tea Party, WHATEVER, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is your voice. Make sure it’s heard. Vote.

There’s a ghost in the men’s bathroom at the Venice campus Library. I’ve told people this before. They chuckle. But I think it’s a nervous chuckle, because they’ve heard what I’ve heard. It doesn’t happen all the time, but here’s how it goes:

I go in and it appears that I’m alone. When I’m washing my hands I hear someone exiting one of the stalls behind me. I wait to see who it is in the mirror. Like clockwork, no one appears, and I turn to look. I’m alone, as always. Obviously I’m not dealing with any kind of malevolent phantom. Ultimately, I just wanted to document my experience. If my blogs suddenly stop…please check the bathroom. I might have done something to anger him.

Okay, ghost stories aside, the open MIC last Thursday was a HUGE success. Over 30 people and 20 readers (which were all terrific)! It was a great kick-off event for Swamp Scribes. The next one is coming soon, I’ll keep you posted.

After the open mic a group of us when out to Chili’s. One of our professors joined us. It was great fun, and my stomach still aches from laughing. Sometimes, however, I think students struggle when developing friendships with professors. It reminds me of something from my Army days. My military superiors would often tell me: “Don’t take my kindness for a weakness.” Yeah,

it sounds harsh, but in reality, it’s the best advice a superior can offer. Yes, you can laugh and joke with your professors, inside and outside of class; what’s important to remember is that the laughing and joking doesn’t transcend into your professor’s mind when they see your name in the grade book.

Having a good relationship with a professor doesn’t give you an all access pass to free roller coaster riding. And this doesn’t mean you can’t have a friendship with a processor. In fact, it can often enhance the college experience, and lead to important professional contacts in the future.

In a nutshell—keep it simple, real, and in perspective. Oh yeah, watch out for ghosts too.

I can almost hear the bells jingling for us to run out of our classes, throwing books, papers, and other paraphernalia up into the air because Spring break is coming!  Oh wait, we still have one more week of that last test or paper that every professor wants to squeeze in.  While I like taking classes, I do find myself on brain overload.  The one week down time to let every thought and equation run out of your ears and onto the sand is welcomed.  The sand I’m referring to will be at the beach, where I’ll hopefully get rid of my pallid hue that makes me look like a northerner.  So let’s plug in for one more jolt through this week.  No getting lazy now.  Then we can all come back on the 15th with blank slates.  I mean, with fresh minds.
