Donating Blood

Campus Activities No Comments »

This is IT, guys! Just one more week, then its FINALS! Can you believe it? I know I keep asking that but I am repeatedly astonished by how quickly this semester has past. Its crazy to look back at the beginning of fall and realize that was not even a year ago. It feels like longer. Meanwhile, this semester feels like I’ve only done a few weeks of classes. I will never understand my perception of time, haha!

Today, the bloodmobile stopped by SCF. A good chance for you to help out our community! Blood is something that is almost always in high-demand for patients, and it doesn’t hurt you to give any. Now I just need to practice what I preach and get my butt in there! I’m sort of afraid of the needles, but I’m sure if I just take that first step, I’ll be able to do it. I’m sure the same applies to many of our readers. ;)

And while we’re on the topic of of donating blood, a classmate of mine gave a great speech about Hepatitis C today. It was a great presentation, very informative and my classmate was a great speaker! I wanted to share some of the things I learned in there, because I think its something everybody should know. Many people end up with Hepatitis C and don’t know until after they have died! Which isn’t to say that this is a disease that is out, slowly decimating our population. There are measures that can be taken, and ways it can be cured. You just have to catch it first!

What does Hepatitis C do? It attacks your liver and can be identified through blood work. If you’re not careful with where you get piercings or tattoos done, Hepatitis C could be passed on through the tools used for this if they are not properly sanitized. You might want to get checked out, just in case. For our older students, if you have received any blood transfusions prior to 1992, you will probably want to be tested, just in case. Prior to 1992, hospitals and blood banks did not screen their donations for Hepatitis C. I didn’t take this on here to scare anybody, I just felt like it was a good health notice for the general public! After all, I know I haven’t heard all that much about Hepatitis. But its a problem that can be fixed, so people might as well have their eyes open.

How has this semester treated everybody? Did it fly by for you as quickly as it has for me? Please, tell me about your semester or maybe even share some stories about donating blood! We love to hear from you, our email is studentblog@scf.edu.

Music Faculty Recital

Campus Activities, Uncategorized, Work/Play Balance No Comments »

As close as this semester is to being completed, I still feel the need for a break. I’m sure not only myself, but other students and faculty feel this way as well.. It’s almost like we are “so close, yet SO FAR AWAY!”

On my way into my Precalc Algebra class on Monday morning, I passed a sign near the East side of the Mathematics building. I’m sure you have seen them around campus. They advertise things such as Farmers Market, or the Art Exhibits, plays, and other campus related events that students would like to know about. I noticed that there was a letter talking about an upcoming music recital, with guitarist Marc Mannino and guests.

I am not normally one for music recitals, but I think this one will be well deserved. His repertoire includes both Jazz, and Classical music, and I cannot think of a better way to relax than listening to Jazz or Classical!

If you are anything like me, you could use a break from studying, memorizing, stressing, and the every day stresses college students go through. Why not give it a try? It’s only $10 to the general public, and $5 for students and faculty. It will be on Thursday April 19th, at 8:00 P.M. in the Neel Performing Arts Center.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the Neel Performing Arts Box Office, at 941-752-5252. If you are interested in knowing more about Marc Mannino, feel free to visit his website at http://www.marcmannino.com/

What types of music do you listen to in order to “escape” for a while, or maybe even to study to? I personally enjoy country music to study with. Nothing can beat good ol’ George Strait when I am doing math homework and having fun! Let me know what you enjoy. studentblog@scf.edu

Smooooth operator

Wow.

Just… wow!

I’ve mentioned the on-campus Smoothie King before, but I’ve never actually gotten a smoothie from them! I’ve heard they’re delicious, but I also know that there is a lot of sugar in a smoothie (and I’ve got a MASSIVE sweet tooth). Well, while I was looking for a paper writing pick me up, I decided to give it a go.

First off, holy canoli, thats a lot of choices. How do I choose between one from another? They even have neat little booster additives! Oh man, thats kind of overwhelming. I ended up going with the guy behind the counter’s favorite kind. Mangonese… something? See, I don’t even remember what I’m drinking. But its really good! I got a small and I have feeling this is going to last me a couple of hours. It is pretty sweet, but that just keeps my sips small. Which means my smoothie will last me longer, haha (victory is mine).

Anyways, I am very clearly sold on Smoothie King now. If you haven’t checked it out, I suggest you do! Its a little under five dollars for a small, and I think thats got to be a good 20 oz. Maybe a little more? For those of you who have already discovered this place, why didn’t you tell me how good it was sooner!? I kid, I kid, I’m actually more curious as to what you like to order when you stop by. Please let me know in an email to studentblog@scf.edu, I want to know what kind of boosters are best and what flavor is the sweetest. ;)

Common Courtesy

Campus Activities, Thoughts No Comments »

I use the student union fairly often. Maybe twenty minutes on Monday, a couple of hours on Wednesday. I think most students do! The student union is a nice place to gather, after all. It has food (mmm, sustenance!), it has friends, and there is a lot of space.

However, there’s always that one table… thats just a mess. Its loud and kind of trashed and not very fun to be around for the rest of us. It reminds me of these amusing signs stashed all over the art building, actually. “Your mother doesn’t work here, clean up your mess!!” Cute, huh? And I mean, even if we were at home, we’re all adults here. We know how to pick up after ourselves. :)

So, I’d just like to bring up a friendly reminder for common courtesy. We’d all like to enjoy what the student union has to offer, and a lot of people go in and out of this building. I just wanted to make a few suggestions.

  • Use your inside voices.
Seriously, though. We’re not seven years old. There are a lot of benches scattered around campus! I have nothing against getting noisy with social interaction. I am in fact a very loud person myself. But there’s a time and place for everything, and common courtesy says please take that outside.
  • Pick up after yourself.
I’ll pass through the student union a good five hours after I saw a group occupying a table, and wow, all their stuff is still there! Empty bottles, dirty plates, napkins… Need I expound? That’s just rude.

Thats really the basics of it! Its doesn’t take any time out of your day to be courteous to everybody else. :D After all, treat others the way you want to be treated! Along the lines of the student union, I was wondering who uses the student union, and for what? It is a hang out, or just a place for a meal. Do you hole up and game on your laptop, or are you writing a paper? Let us know in an email to studentblog@scf.edu!

Aria Concert

Campus Activities, Uncategorized, Work/Play Balance No Comments »

You know what your plans for the day should include?

Attending SCF’s Aria concert tonight! At 8:00 pm in the Neel auditorium, lots of SCF students will be performing some beautiful pieces of music. The main focus (if you couldn’t guess from the name) are aria’s from famous operas (some more famous ones being The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute). Many pieces will be accompanied with live music and over-all I think the show is going to turn out great!

I’d really like to go, but unfortunately I found out after I’d already made other plans. Basically, it sucks to be me, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t go and enjoy it for me! ;) Tickets for admission will probably be around $8, and students are half-off! I hope you have a good time (because you’re going, right?) and please let me know what songs were your favorites! Our email is studentblog@scf.edu.
