Many teachers in college will allow you to eat during class as long as you are paying attention. This is great for people who don’t have a break between classes and/or have a very long class schedule. I have to say, though, there are many foods that should not be eaten in a classroom because they can be distracting to others, be messy, and/or make the whole room smell like food for the rest of the day.These are my guidelines to what you should avoid eating in a classroom.
1. Loud, Crunchy Foods
Chips, Doritos, Fritos. These are good examples of foods that make that annoying crunch. It’s hard to pay attention to a teacher when all I can hear next to me is CRUNCHCRUNCHCRUNCHNOMNOMCRUNCH. The noise distracts me to the point of wanting to throw the snack-filled bag out a window. If you do plan on eating a bag of crunchy snacks, try to finish them before the lecture starts.
2. Anything that involves a hard-boiled egg
Hard-boiled eggs are delicious. I know. But the smell of them can linger in a classroom for hours. I doubt many people would like to sit in a classroom that smells of egg. Save this snack for when you’re in a well-ventilated area.
Do I really need to explain this? I’m sure we all know that the smell of canned fish is not the most appealing thing, so maybe eating it
in a classroom isn’t the best idea. Again, save this for well-ventilated areas.
4. Pasta with Sauce
It’s messy. It usually smells of garlic. It makes the people around you hungry. There are many reasons why you should avoid eating saucy pasta in a classroom. In addition, if you’re not careful, you may end up with a lap full of noodles. If you’ve got another class to get to and no time to change, you’ll end up walking around stained and smelling like vampire repellent.
5. Unpeeled Oranges (and other juicy
They’re juicy, which means they’re messy. They’re also very sticky. Unless you happen to have an arsenal of napkins and wet wipes in your backpack, don’t eat oranges. Even then, having to clean up after eating an orange would be a hassle to do in the middle of class, and you would probably end up distracting your clasmates. Avoid any kind
of fruit that’s extra juicy. A fruit salad is fine, so long as you have a fork.
I do not want to stare at another person’s banana peel while trying to take lecture notes. I wouldn’t even want to look at my own banana peel during class.
So that’s my list of foods that should be avoided in classrooms. There’s more, but making that list would take forever.
Basically, if it smells strongly, don’t eat it in class. If it is messy, don’t
eat it in class. If it is loud, don’t eat it in class. If you follow those three basic rules, you’ll be fine.
